The Magic Flute

The Magic Flute

Orchestration

In total awareness the orchestrations eludes itself from the innumerable attempts of interpretation which this piece has, over its initial 200 years, experienced. Lindau’s Magic Flute is played in a fairyland. Not only because the genre fairy tale is broken but rather because paradoxes are selectively used to cast a spell of charm on the audience. Every viewer may and should find and discover himself in The Magic Flute.

Stage History

The world debut was on the 30th September 1791 in the Freihaus-Theater in Wieden, at a suburbia stage in Vienna. By October 1791, The Magic Flute had played over 20 times and over the course of the next months it continued to remain in the repertoire of the Viennese theatre group. One year later on the 25th of October 1792, it had an extremely successful run before continuing on to Munich, then later to Frankfurt in 1793 and finally to Berlin and Weimer in 1794.
